1. GWAR
I saw GWAR last night at FunFunFun Fest for the 2nd time this year and they were, by far, the highlight of my first day at the festival. Each time I see them they put so much energy and power into their shows, it’s really a full-body experience to see them live. GWAR manages to outperform and outdo any other band at a festival (even Andrew WK at SXSW who performed just before them) despite often having 10 or 20 years on them. There’s always dismembered effigies of loathsome characters (like last night’s Sarah Palin) and pouring of blood and other bodily fluids on the audience - and they love it. And so does Joan Rivers, evidently, judging by an appearance Oderus and Beefcake made on her show in the 1990s.

6. Lykke Li - “Get Some”
A few years ago I worked at a local boutique called Strut and some of the girls were obsessed with Lykke Li. I never really jumped on that bandwagon, but since her music was on constant rotation it did get stuck in my head and over time I began to enjoy some of the songs. Recently two new songs were released online and I have to admit, I’m pretty obsessed with “get some” - the tribal beats and aggressive lyrics, it’s very sexy and visceral. Definitely going to be getting the rest of this album when it’s released!

8. Best Coast

Today Best Coast is playing FunFunFun Fest and I’m thrilled to see them live! My friend Nina introduced them to me a few months back and I was immediately addicted to the entire EP - it’s fun, infectious Cali surf/pop rock that sounds a little vintage and a little lo-fi. Their sound is quintessential California and on breezy, warm days here in Austin I like to listen to this song and pretend I’m back in L.A.
