Favorite Things for Fall

Since returning from NYC yesterday I have done little other than sleep and (today) work. I have over 200 photos to sift through and edit which will take a good chunk of my time this evening, but in the meantime I wanted to share a few of my current favorite things and obsessions.

1. Willow Smith’s video for “Whip My Hair”

Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” was basically the anthem of the New York trip - I’m pretty sure we listened to it at least once a day much to the chagrin of Joe who was the only member of our party not entirely captivated by this little wunderkind. I suppose it’s easy to be hip and have a badass song when your dad is Will Smith and your producer Jay-Z. Nonetheless this video is completely great, there’s no two ways about it. Even Willow’s naysayers have to admit that the video is clever, gorgeously shot and fucking fun. Who doesn’t want to be one of those kids dancing?! And the “teacher” character at the end (the Lady in Red) who absolutely loses her shit? Amazing. It’s easy to dismiss her as some spoiled 9yr-old, the offspring of Hollywood A-listers and write her musical attempts off as some sort of showbiz nepotism, but I promise once you listen you will change your mind.

2. Steven Madden “Flannel” Boots

Encompassing every fall trend I love, the Steven Madden “Flannel” boot is basically the perfect boot for the upcoming fall/winter season and my version of an ideal boot - flat, leather, brown, comfortable, utilitarian. Plus, since I’m looking for a replacement for my current daily boots (which are definitely on their last leg) these may just be it. I’m a big boots wearer - they go with virtually every outfit and are by far the most comfortable shoes besides sneakers (which I refuse to wear outside of a gym). Find these on the Steven Madden site, they are also available in black ($149.95).

3. “Gallop with Glamour” horse dress from ModCloth

I know it’s fall and a sleeveless dress isn’t entirely appropriate for most parts of the country, but here in Austin, Texas we can expect at least one more month of warmth so why not enjoy it in a cute dress decorated in brightly colored horses? Or save it for the cooler weather and just throw a sweater over it and some navy or maroon tights. Done. Available at ModCloth ($79.99)

4. +J Jil Sander Collection for Uniqlo

Leslie and I both sort of flipped out when we arrived at Uniqlo to check out the Jil Sander collection which launched on October 8th. The selection was far greater than the online previews had led me to believe and there were several enticing pieces in keeping with that classic Jil Sander aesthetic - clean cut, simple, flawlessly tailored, architectural accents. The jacket above was the first item I picked up and I absolutely loved it but couldn’t justify purchasing a jacket that had no clasps or closing mechanisms of any kind. Although everyone kept reminding me that in Austin I would probably wear this more than a thick, heavy winter coat, I did actually need a good winter coat so I instead went with a longer model (no image was available online, but I will post photos asap!). Evidently the store had sold out of most of the styles early on and had just recently received a shipment of newer designs! And this after only 2 weeks!

5. Rihanna’s video for “Only Girl”

I have to admit, I’m not a huge Rihanna fan. Usually I find her voice nasal and irritating, but this song is so insanely cute and sweet and just makes me feel really fucking good. I guess it helps that the video is beautiful and shot with this soft blush filter so everything is gauzy and pink and lush. And she looks really cute in it too. I can’t stop myself from loving this song, this video, everything about this!

6. Gap’s fall shoe collection

This is how badly I want the fall/winter 2010 shoes from the Gap: I emailed customer service to find out when they would be available online/in stores. No, seriously, I did that. They responded a few days later as follows:

“Dear Camila,

Thank you for your email regarding our Pierre Hardy boots.  Our Pierre Hardy holiday collections will be available online and in select stores around mid October.  Please be sure to keep an eye out for these amazing designs on Gap.com.

We hope this information has been helpful and we look forward to shopping with you again soon.

If we may be of further assistance, please contact us at custserv@gap.com or by calling 1-800-GAP-STYLE. If you are calling from outside of the U.S. you may also reach us at 1-614-564-2169.

Sincerely,

Kylie
Customer Service Consultant”

A little vague, right? So I did some more poking around on blogs, fashion magazine sites, etc and found out that they will be available sometime between October 25th (TODAY) and October 28th. The rest of Gap’s fall shoe collection (the non-Pierre Hardy pieces) are equally as fantastic and should be available by December.

The shoes will first be made available in stores in New York, Chicago and Houston (may be an excuse to go home to “visit the parents”). On the 28th, L.A and San Francisco will begin featuring the shoes in stores. The Pierre Hardy boots retail for $195 and are in-store exclusives.

7. Hangry & Angry’s “Kill Me Kiss Me”

This video played as part of F.I.T’s “Japan Fashion Now” as an example of the Gothic Lolita subculture street style that is popular in Japan. I stood and watched this video in awe because it is so extraordinarily over the top and campy - I don’t think this would fly here in the U.S but in Japan it seems pretty par for the course. Japanese street culture has always fascinated me in this weird, bizarre way because it seems so fucking strange yet not to them!
