Feathers Vintage Boutique
South Congress District, Austin, Texas
Feathers opened up a few years ago and is owned and operated by two former retail assistants from Buffalo Exchange. The store has some amazing vintage pieces in excellent condition and some who-would-ever-wear-that pieces in questionable condition. The prices run from acceptable to ridiculous.
Feathers is organized into a hodgepodge assortment of little rooms that run and ricochet off one another in which everything is neatly organized by color and style. Rows and rows of gorgeous, brightly colored shoes against backdrops of feather fans and silk scarfs greet you as you step down into room after room. Aesthetically speaking, the store is beautiful. The rooms are painted soothing colors from taupe to turquoise and everything is clean and tidy. In addition to clothing and shoes, you will find sunglasses, purses, shoes and the occasional vintage Vogue or Playboy.
These girls know their vintage. Ask them what they’re wearing and you’ll get a brief history on jeans, Elsa Schiaparelli or whatever else has got them going that day.
The store’s only real downfall (other than the occasional exuberant price tag) is that they only have two dressing rooms. On busy days, expect to wait.
Last time I went in there I found a white fox fur 70s jacket for $100 - a complete steal! (I’m still beating myself up for not having bought it). Prior to that I found a lilac suede poncho with silver cowboy buttons all over it and a long fringe. $40.
Some of the shoes, purses and accessories are overpriced for the condition, but this is definitely a great place to start looking. I feel like the owners have a good eye for interesting pieces.
Also, I’d just like to remind my lovely readers to be respectful. Vintage shopping is not like running amok at a Foley’s. These small boutiques are the owner’s babies, they oftentimes hand pick every item you see and take great care to organize the store and their merchandise in a way that is pleasing to the eye and easy to maneuver. So let’s show them a little love, eh?
